The Digital Journalist > Gail Mooney Covers Platypus Workshop at NAB 2010
Sunday, May 19, 2013 -
It was around 1:30PM when I walked into the room. People were dropping like flies some threw their hands up and just couldnt take it anymore some cried and some even fainted. It was the second to the last day of the Platypus Workshop and the students were struggling to finish their final projects for the 2 oclock deadline. Some had been up all night, working non-stop, no food, no daylight and no break from technology. And this was after a full day of shooting, not to mention being in Las Vegas for a week, which is enough to drive anybody crazy. This is why they call it boot camp.

It was the year of HDSLR accessories and 3D at the annual giant NAB Show this year in Las Vegas. After teaching an intense Las Vegas Platypus HDSLR Workshop with my colleague Dirck Halstead and four days of roaming the four large exhibit halls, talking to reps and developers and going to post production workshops and going to the annual Final Cut Pro Super Meet, by the last day of the show (and 15 days in Vegas) I was among the Walking Dead at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Big Picture > Deadly crossing
Friday, May 17, 2013 -
In 2012, sheriff's deputies in Brooks County found 129 bodies, around double the amount from the year before and six times the number recorded in 2010. Most of those who die succumb to the punishing heat and rough terrain that comprise the ranch lands of south Texas. Reuters photographer, Eric Thayer, traveled to Brooks County, Texas and Reynosa, Mexico to investigate the rising rates of immigrant deaths along the border there, spending time at a migrant's hostel in Mexico and with U.S. Border Patrol in Brooks County. Many migrants, after spending several weeks traveling through Mexico and past the Rio Grande, spend a few days in a "stash house," such as Casa del Migrante, in Reynosa, Mexico, and many are ignorant of the treacherous journey ahead. --

A Photo Editor > This Week In Photography Books – Mike Brodie
Friday, May 17, 2013 - by Jonathan Blaustein I’ve always loved “East of Eden.” Such a brilliant book. My brother and I didn’t get along well, for years, so the novel just made sense to me. The Big Picture > Sugar and salt
Monday, May 13, 2013 -
Although modern techniques often bring sugar and salt to our tables, these two simple treats for the palate are still harvested and processed in traditional, if not ancient methods the world over. Over 160 million tons of sugar is produced annually in well over 100 countries, most of it processed from cane in tropical countries. The world uses 240 million tons of salt every year in everything from food to industrial applications. Gathered here are images of the toils that result in two of our favorite flavors. --

His proclamation noted, "In an average year, wildfires burn 900,000 acres of California's timber and grasslands." The Visual Student > Students, Spot News and the Boston Bombing
Thursday, April 25, 2013 - Michelle Jay was on Heartbreak Hill when her phone died. The photo editor of The Daily Free Press at Boston University didn’t think much of it. She was doing double duty, focusing on a few runners and photographing the Boston Marathon for an advanced photojournalism class and for the newspaper. Around 3 p.m., she noticed that runners were slowing down to a walk. A few police cars sped by. Then, a woman told her there had been two explosions near the finish line, about five miles away. “I just remember my heart stopping,” the 21-year-old junior said. The last text she had received before her phone died was from another B.U. photographer near the finish line. “As an editor, my first thought was, Where are my people? There was initially a moment of guilt, and I was like, Oh my God, if anybody gets hurt and I sent them there, how do I deal with that?” Jay’s professor at Boston University, Joe Lippincott, was putting together feedback on student portfolios when he heard about the bombing. With all 21 of his intro and advanced photojournalism students photographing somewhere along the marathon route that day, he was in “panic mode,” he [...]

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 - Carolyn Van Houten is a junior at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and is currently interning at the Raleigh News & Observer. She is the UNC NPPA chapter president and will be interning for the Chicago Tribune this coming summer. Carolyn’s work has been recognized by Hearst, North Carolina Press Photographers Association, College Photographer of the Year, South by Southwest, and the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. Congratulations on winning Hearst Picture Story, can you talk a little about the story you worked on? The House Autism Built began as an assignment for a documentary class, but quickly grew into a personal project that I plan on continuing. Some stories just feel natural from the start. This was one. From the first day, the O’Loughlin’s welcomed me into their home and helped me to learn about living with autism. However, I made a connection with them that transformed it into a personal project and made me fascinated in the topic. What was the biggest challenge you faced while working on this story? For me, the best part of visual storytelling is the connections you make with your subjects. Oftentimes with autism, that is extremely difficult. Marcus O’Loughlin, the subject of the story, is so severe [...]

The Visual Student > Emerging Talent – Grant Hindsley
Friday, March 8, 2013 - Grant Hindsley grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and is a photojournalism student at the University of Missouri. He first interned at the Associated Press in Los Angeles last year and will be interning at the Denver Post for the coming summer. Grant is also a semi-finalist for this year’s Hearst photojournalism competition. See more of Grant’s work here. What brought you to photojournalism? I honestly don’t quite remember much of an ‘a-ha’ moment when I realized photojournalism was ‘it’ for me, but in retrospect, it all makes a lot of sense. My mom is extremely artistic and is a great painter, doodler, and all around artist. My dad is just as artistic but manifests it through architecture. His father was an engineer, so mechanical precision runs in the family. For quite sometime I thought I’d be an engineer. I even got some college credit through a special engineering program at my high school. But later in high school, as I became more and more interested in photography and took some classes, I realized I didn’t want to spend everyday in an office and wanted to explore, experience and see everything life has to offer. Photojournalism supports that far more than mechanical [...]

The Visual Student > Emerging Talent – Ian Bates
Saturday, February 2, 2013 - Ian Bates grew up in the suburban town of North Brunswick, New Jersey. His interest in photography began with his obsession of creating things. First, with a cheap point-and-shoot film camera brought to a field trip to the zoo in elementary school, and later in high school photography classes. The images became a way to store memories with truth and without them fading away. He is now a junior at Ohio University working on his bachelor of science in visual communication with an emphasis in photojournalism and a specialization in sociology. He recently was awarded Silver in both the General News and Feature categories in the 67th College Photographer of the Year competition, and has shot for AARP Bulletin, The New York Times, Reuters, The Athens NEWS and The Asbury Park Press. Check out the rest of Ian’s work here. What do you want to do after college? This is a pretty loaded question for me these days. Its really tough figuring out whether or not I want try to get a job at a newspaper (if there are any jobs available) or if I want to put my energy into building a freelance business. Right now I am aiming towards trying [...]

The Visual Student > Building Strong Work and a Stronger Community
Thursday, January 31, 2013 - The students of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Journalism gained great experience and served their community by documenting the devastation of a tornado that killed eight and tore apart the town of Harrisburg in February of 2012. Not only did they cover the aftermath as the news broke, they transmitted for daily media coverage and produced a book that raised $15,000* for rebuilding efforts. Mark Dolan, assistant professor of photojournalism and new media at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and elected NPPA board member, cancelled the lab for his class the day of the storm so that students could go out and document the tornado. “The storm broke early Wednesday morning (4:56 a.m. – the name of the book) – the local morning news shows (TV and Radio) were reporting on it as information started coming in. There wasn’t a lot of information at first, as it took a while until people fully realized how serious the damage was. By about 6 a.m. the local news shows began reporting live from the area and we began to see visuals of the damage.” “Documenting Harrisburg was the most difficult situation I have experienced as a journalist,” said Danielle McGrew, [...]
