Guevara teaches journalism at Homestead Senior High School in Homestead, Fla.
In the spring of 2000, she graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in communication and English education. After moving with her parents and eight older brothers and sisters to Homestead. from her native country of El Salvador, Maria quickly learned the language and excelled in school.
Having graduated from Homestead Senior High, she decided that she wanted to give back to her community. She became a teacher and returned to her alma mater.
Guevara plans to return to graduate school soon. Being the only member of her family to earn a four-year degree, she is planning to become the first to receive a doctorate as well.
Although most of her time is spent working with children, she also finds time to tend to her other passions, calligraphy, photography, and running.
Guevara participated in the 2002 ASNE High School Journalism Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.
