Iraq escapade foolish, but interest in the world deserves support

Now that he's back, everyone's free to take their shots at Farris Hassan and his dangerous escapade to Iraq. It sounds like Hassan has learned a lesson in responsibility and caution, and hopefully other teens won't seek their 15 minutes of fame in such a foolish manner.

There's one aspect of Hassan's adventure, however, that is worth nurturing. It's admirable that the Fort Lauderdale youth has taken such a deep interest in the world beyond South Florida. Too many people, including adults, don't have enough of an appreciation for geography and foreign cultures.

But let's continue to encourage youths to develop and satisfy their curiosity about the world in less hazardous and more enriching ways, by learning languages and participating in foreign exchange programs.
