Jeffery C. Mays has been a reporter at The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J., since 1998. He came to the paper as an editorial assistant in 1997 and was promoted to a reporter 10 months later.
Before joining the Star-Ledger, Mays worked as a reporter at Institutional Investor magazine covering the financial markets.
Mays has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in journalism from Columbia University.
Born in Brooklyn the youngest of six siblings, Mays attended high school in Dallas, where he began his journalism career at the Hillcrest (High School) Hurricane, rising to the rank of managing editor and winning several statewide writing awards.
As an undergraduate at Columbia, Mays worked on the student-run newspaper, The Spectator, and helped started a couple of student magazines.
His work has also appeared in Wired magazine and on various Web sites.
Mays is a member of the Garden State Association of Black Journalists.
